Waze Removes Key Reporting Tool from iOS App, Set to Introduce Gemini as Replacement

Posted on 31 March 2025

Waze, the popular navigation app, is undergoing significant changes as it phases out a major reporting tool from its iOS application. The app, which relies heavily on community-generated data to enhance its routing capabilities, is set to replace the existing Google Assistant integration with a new feature called Gemini.

This move aims to enable users to report road hazards in a more conversational manner, thus reducing distractions while driving. Currently, Waze users can report various hazards on the road, including accidents, heavy traffic, and weather conditions, which help the app adjust routes in real-time.

Traditionally, users have relied on touch inputs or Google Assistant to relay such information. However, using touch input while driving can be challenging and Google Assistant’s performance on iOS has not been optimal.

Consequently, Waze has decided to eliminate Google Assistant integration from its iOS version, while it will continue to work effectively on Android devices. Last week, Waze staff member Leigh announced the changes on the Waze discussion forum, confirming the company’s commitment to providing users with effective tools for reporting hazards.

The upcoming Gemini system promises to allow drivers to report incidents in a more natural, conversational way. For example, a user might say, “So this crash is why traffic is such a nightmare” to report both an accident and its impact on traffic flow in one sentence.

As Waze prepares to implement this new feature, it underscores its goal of enhancing user experience while prioritizing safety on the roads. Further details regarding the Gemini system are anticipated, promising an evolution in how drivers interact with the app.
