Google Boosts App Support for Snapdragon X Laptops, Enhancing User Experience Significantly

Posted on 26 March 2025

The launch of the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus last year intensified the need for Windows applications on Arm-based PCs. One notable absence was Google Drive, but following a beta phase in 2024, Google has officially released its Drive app for Windows on Snapdragon and other Arm-based devices. The new Google Drive app supports Arm-powered PCs natively, including those equipped with Snapdragon X chips.

This means devices like the Surface Laptop 7 and other compatible models can now run Google Drive seamlessly. The rollout started on March 24, 2025, and may take up to 15 days for all users to access the update. Users who participated in the beta phase will see an automatic app update; those who didn’t can download and install Google Drive on any Windows 11 device with Arm support.

The app is accessible to a wide audience, including Google Workspace users, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google account holders. The introduction of a major application like Google Drive on Arm-powered laptops marks an important development in the ecosystem, as it demonstrates the efforts of Microsoft and Qualcomm to enhance native app support for Windows on Arm. This transition to Windows on Arm reflects a significant evolution in the PC landscape, merging the familiar Windows user experience with the efficiency of Arm chips.

Users can expect benefits such as extended battery life, constant connectivity, and portability. While many may find the shift to a Snapdragon X-powered PC straightforward, some users will need to seek alternatives for applications that are not yet fully compatible. For those dependent on specialized software, sticking with an x86 Windows PC may still be the more suitable choice.
