If your Chromecast has been unresponsive since last week’s outage, good news is here: Google has released a fix. Engineers took a full week to prepare this update, which may not fully resolve issues for those who attempted a factory reset during troubleshooting.
Google announced that the fix is now rolling out for Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. To check if your device has the required update, verify its firmware version:
– Chromecast (2nd gen): Firmware version 1.56.467165
– Chromecast Audio: Firmware version 1.56.467166
If your Chromecast does not have one of these firmware versions, it is recommended to reboot the device to initiate the update process.
Additionally, users who performed a factory reset during troubleshooting might still face difficulties reconfiguring their devices. Google is aware of this problem and is working on another update that will specifically address the re-setup issue.
They will provide users with instructions once this new fix is available. Google has expressed sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by this disruption and is dedicated to getting all users back online as quickly as possible.
The update being rolled out this week transitions Chromecast devices to a new Google-owned certificate authority with an expiration set for 2045. It is likely that similar updates will also be developed for other Chromecast models, even though the company has made the decision to discontinue the lineup.
